Course program:
The course will cover the all-encompassing role of the Producer of Motion Pictures and Television. If the ideal Producer exists, he/she would be responsible for three major areas; Business, Creative, and Craft. However, much like the other creative tasks--Directors and Screen Writers--Producers bring with them the sum total of their background experience. If the individual came from the world of business, his/her strength would lie in organizational, financial, and inter-personal skills. Similarly, someone with a background in writing would be more centered in the development of the script as opposed to securing the funding, etc…The same would apply to backgrounds in theater, architecture, design, etc., The course will assist the student in discovering their respective strengths as well as encouraging them to acquire new areas.
In some respects, this will be a course without boundaries, inasmuch as the students themselves will indicate through their participation, which of the many subjects are to be dealt with in greater detail than others. While courses in Directing and Screenwriting offer more proscribed syllabi, The Producing course of necessity, is more an exchange of information. The exception will be the actual experience in breaking down a script, scheduling a production, and creating a budget.
There will be screenings, handouts, and many discussions which will result in the student acquiring firm understanding of what it takes to produce a motion picture.
